Across 50 studies, Baymard Institute puts the average online cart abandonment rate at 70.22%. That means for every 10 customers who add a product to their cart, about 3 complete the purchase. The checkout is where revenue goes to die, unless you optimize it ruthlessly.
Why Shopify Checkouts Underperform
The default Shopify checkout is functional but far from optimized. Common issues I see across store audits: forced account creation, limited payment options visible, no urgency or scarcity signals, missing trust badges, slow page loads on mobile, and a generic look that breaks brand continuity.
The Express Payment Stack
The single highest-impact change you can make is putting express payment buttons (Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay) above the fold on the cart page, not buried in the checkout. Shopify reports that Shop Pay can lift conversion by up to 50% compared with guest checkout. On the Puur Smile store, an A/B test adding express payment methods to the product page lifted conversion 24.89%, with the interval entirely above zero.
Guest Checkout as Default
Requiring account creation before purchase is conversion suicide. Always default to guest checkout and offer account creation as a post-purchase option. In Baymard's survey of US shoppers, 18% of those who abandoned an order did so because the site wanted them to create an account.
Trust Signals That Actually Work
Not all trust badges are created equal. The ones that move the needle: payment security logos (Visa, Mastercard, PayPal), money-back guarantee badges, shipping and returns policy summary, real-time 'X people bought this today' counters, and SSL/secure checkout indicators.
The Post-Purchase Upsell Framework
The thank-you page is the most underutilized real estate in eCommerce. After a customer completes their purchase, they're in peak buying mode. I use Checkout Champ to insert 1-click upsell offers immediately after payment confirmation. The key is relevance, offer complementary products, not random ones.
Mobile-First Checkout Design
On the Puur Smile store, 1.78 million of the 1.97 million sessions in the engagement period came from mobile. Your checkout must be designed for thumbs, not mice. Key principles: large tap targets (minimum 48px), single-column layout, auto-fill for address fields, number pad for phone/zip inputs, and sticky CTA buttons at the bottom of the viewport.
Measuring Checkout Performance
Track these metrics weekly: cart-to-checkout rate, checkout completion rate, average order value (AOV), upsell acceptance rate, and payment method distribution. Use GA4 enhanced eCommerce events to build a funnel visualization, it shows you exactly where customers drop off.
