Every store owner wants to know the same thing: 'Are my numbers good?' The honest answer starts with published benchmarks rather than anecdotes, so these are the ones I use when I audit a store, with where each one comes from.
Conversion Rate
Littledata's benchmark of 426 Shopify stores (July to October 2026) puts the median conversion rate at 1.4%. The top 20% of stores convert above 2.7%, and the top 10% above 3.5%. Mobile converts lower than desktop, so check your device mix before comparing, and remember that vertical, price point and traffic source all move the number. Compare against your own trend first and the benchmark second. If you are well below the median, your checkout and product pages need attention before you buy more traffic.
Average Order Value (AOV)
AOV determines how much margin you have to acquire customers, and it varies too much by category for one benchmark to mean much. The levers are consistent: product bundling, upsell funnels and free-shipping thresholds. The arithmetic is simple: a $10 AOV increase across 1,000 monthly orders is $10,000 in additional revenue with no extra traffic cost.
Flows Against Campaigns
Klaviyo's 2026 benchmarks, drawn from more than 183,000 of its customers, show how far automated flows outperform broadcast campaigns: a 5.58% average click rate for flows against 1.69% for campaigns, and placed-order rates many times higher. If most of your email revenue comes from campaigns, the gap is usually missing automation, not a small list.
Cart Abandonment
Baymard Institute's average across 50 studies is 70.22%: roughly seven in ten carts are abandoned. In Baymard's survey of US shoppers, the top reasons are extra costs that were too high (40%), slow delivery (20%), not trusting the site with card details (19%) and being made to create an account (18%). Every one of those is fixable in the checkout.
Add-to-Cart Rate
Track add-to-cart rate per product page, against your own history and against your best-performing pages, rather than against a generic figure. If add-to-cart is strong but checkout completion is weak, the problem is in the checkout flow, not the product pages.
Open Rates
Klaviyo puts the 2026 average open rate at 31% for campaigns and 32.2% for flows, with the top 10% of brands above 45%. Opens are a weaker signal than they used to be, so judge each flow on clicks and placed orders as well.
What to Do If You're Below Benchmark
Start with the metric that has the biggest revenue impact. For most stores, that's conversion rate. As arithmetic: on 10,000 monthly sessions with a $90 AOV, one extra percentage point of conversion is 100 more orders, or $9,000 a month. Audit your checkout first (cart abandonment), then product pages (add-to-cart rate), then traffic quality (bounce rate by source). Fix the funnel before scaling ad spend.
